Most women on any high-risk antepartum unit are on bedrest due to complications related to preterm labor. Bedrest commonly is prescribed by physicians in order to decrease fetal pressure on the cervix, improve oxygenation to the fetus, provide a period of rest from physical stress, and allow for fetal growth.
